COMMUNITY CHRONICLE

May Update

image

May Day, observed on May 1, has ancient origins but in most other countries May 1 is celebrated as their Labor Day. We might recall from our own history books the 1886 Haymarket riot in Chicago, Illinois where 40,000 working Americans went on strike demanding an 8 hour workday. What began as a peaceful rally turned violent and deadly when a bomb exploded as police were attempting to disperse the striking workers. Gunfire ensued leaving many police officers and civilians dead. May Day, ironically, also marks the end of the ‘winter half’ of the year. In some parts of the US, small May Day baskets are filled with flowers or treats and left anonymously on someone’s doorstep. Tradition states that if the anonymous donor is caught then a kiss is to be exchanged.

I find these two paradoxical celebrations of the same day very interesting and related to the work of The Adam Foundation. As a non-profit organization, The Adam Foundation works diligently to promote the independence, influence and interests of the local LGBT community. By attending Martini Night (May 14 at Speakeasy Jazz), Adam Night Out (May 29 at Meridian Restaurant) or Triad Pride 2008 (May 7-11 with events in Winston-Salem and Greensboro, including another showing of “For the Bible Tells Me So” on May 9 at NCSA), your presence represents the power and impact we can make within our local community - just like the 40,000 striking Chicago workers.

When you purchase tickets to the Adam Festival (November 1 at the Millennium Center) or become an individual/corporate sponsor of the Adam Foundation, you are filling the May Day baskets of many local organizations serving persons with HIV/AIDS. While you may not get a kiss in return for your donation (although that would be an interesting live auction item at the Adam Festival), your generosity is celebrated and significant to many ‘doorsteps’ in our community.

Until next time-

I hope that you are doing well. I am pleased to announce that due to continuing, unprecedented demand, OUT at the Movies in collaboration with Triad Pride/2008 will, once again, screen the acclaimed documentary, For the BIBLE Tells Me So, on Friday, May 9th, 7:00 PM at the ACE Theatre Complex on the campus of the North Carolina School of the Arts, 1533 S. Main Street in Winston-Salem.

As moving as the film is, the post-film Q & A promises to be even more powerful. Ministers David and Brenda Poteat of Burlington and Mary Lou and Bob Wallner of Little Rock, Arkansas are scheduled to attend, and there is a very good chance that members of another one of the five families profiled in the documentary will join us, as well!

In addition, in celebration of Triad Pride/2008, there will be no admission charge, however, donations will be accepted. Any proceeds will benefit the Adam Foundation and NCSA's School of Filmmaking.

To reserve tickets, reply to this e-mail or call 336.918.0902. There is a limit of 8 reserved tickets per person, and you must include a phone number with your reservation. Reserved tickets will be held until 6:45 PM on May 9th. At that time, they will be released in the event that others without reservations are waiting to get in.

Take care and I hope to see you OUT at the Movies!
